Below are a few word/writing exercises that can help you get through this long winter.
Another way to break out from the winter doldrums is to break into the magazine and newspaper market!
Get out of the house for just a few short hours and bring a breath of fresh air into your writing!
The last available class of this winter semester still has openings (and the spring semester is weeks away!); so check your calendar and call right away to reserve your space for this Thursday’s class -Wrapping It Up with Holly Johnson from 6:30-8 PM. You have probably seen Holly’s work in The Writer magazine, or in the Racine Journal Times (just to name a few), so you know this will be some great information.
Now here’s some amusing ways to have fool around with words:
Play with creating a new word from two words, such as:
When it is raining and snowing at the same time (as it was on Monday),
create “snaining.”
Put two similar animals together such as, hawk and owl to
come up with a, ” howl.”
Cardinal and blue jay= “carjay”
Rotweiller and poodle =”rotapoo,” “pooweiller,” or “rotdoodle”… (Not so far off and silly when you hear of these new “designer dog” names!)
Whenever you see two similar things, play with putting the words together. While sitting at the stop sign, look around at the names of the cars and trucks near you and put those words together- make your own form of a “hybrid” car! For example, a Voyager and a Jetta = a “Voyjet” or a “Jetager.”
You get the idea.
This is an important element in brain development for young children (I write about this in my latest book which I researched for over a year), so if you are around children, share your word game and help grow their minds and maybe a future writer as well!
Have fun!
Keep writing- moving your fingers keeps you warm!
